TFSA room starts accumulating the year you turn 18 (or 2009, whichever is later).

TFSA room only accumulates during years of Canadian residency — immigrants start earning room from their arrival year.

What is TFSA contribution room?

The Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) lets Canadians invest and grow money completely tax-free. Each year, the federal government sets a new annual contribution limit — in 2026, it's $7,000. Your room accumulates from the year you turned 18 (as long as you were a Canadian resident), even if you never opened a TFSA.

The most common TFSA mistake

Over-contributing to a TFSA triggers a 1% per month penalty tax on the excess amount. This often happens when Canadians withdraw and re-contribute in the same calendar year without realizing their room isn't restored until January 1st of the next year.

How to find your official room

Log into My CRA Account and look under "TFSA" → "Contribution Room". This is the only authoritative number. Our calculator gives you a fast estimate, but CRA's records account for withdrawals, previous contributions, and residency history.
